D
irector Raam Reddy says
the National Award for
his Kannada directorial
debut “Thithi”, which has been
internationally feted, is a dream-
come-true-moment for his team
as the film is getting ready for its
release in theatres.
“After such an incredible jour-
ney internationally, winning a
National Award is a dream come
true. With major awards going to
mega blockbusters like
‘Baahubali’ and ‘Bajirao
Mastani’, and with the backing of
distributor Suresh Productions,
we are now confident and very
hopeful for the commercial
potential of ‘Thithi’,” Reddy told
IANS.
“Thithi”, a film about how
three generations of men react
to their grandfather’s death, had
already won top awards at
Locarno International Film
Festival.
“With our release slated for
the end of April or early May,
and with the support and belief
of stars such as Rana Daggubati,
we feel positive about ‘Thithi’
finding a wide audience in
Karnataka and across the coun-
try,” he said.

B
ollywood’s multi-faceted
talent Vishal Bhardwaj
was ecstatic on Monday
upon bagging the Best
ScreenplayWriter (adapted)
award for “Talvar”. While he has
won six National Awards in the
past, he says what makes this
one “truly special” is that it’s his
first for screenplay.
“I am thrilled and honored to
receive my seventh National
Award. What makes this one
truly special is that it is my first
for screenplay. After ‘Makdee’,
this is only the second screen-
play I have written on my own,”
Bhardwaj said in a statement.
“I was particularly anxious
about the screenplay of ‘Talvar’
as it constantly jumps timelines
and intricately weaves together
multiple perspectives. It was a
challenge to write and I am
deeply humbled by this presti-
gious recognition,” he added.
“Talvar”, directed by Meghna
Gulzar, was a retelling of three
investigation theories behind
the Aarushi Talwar-Hemraj
murder case.
Upon his victory, Bhardwaj
once again took the opportunity
to “highlight the deplorable
condition of our justice system”.
“Innocent citizens
across India are being
denied justice in cases
that stay pending for
years to decades. I
hope we can all stand
as one in saying this is
unacceptable,” he
said.
Earlier, Bhardwaj
had won the National
Film Award for Best
Screenplay for “Haider” (which
he had co-written with Basharat
Peer). The film had also won
him the Best Music Direction
honor. He had also been lauded
for his compositions for
“Ishqiya” and “Godmother”.
These apart, he had won the
National Awards for Best
Children’s Film (“The Blue
Umbrella”) and a Special Jury
Award for “Omkara”.

A
ctor Dhanush-pro-
duced Tamil drama
“Visaaranai”, which
bagged three National Films
Awards on Monday, has given
the star triple the joy and the
encouragement to back more
such films.
“When it comes to some
films, you know they will be
special right from the begin-
ning. ‘Visaaranai’ was one
such film. Three awards for it
means triple the joy for me
and encouragement to sup-
port more such efforts,” said
Dhanush in a statement.
National Award-winning
filmmaker Vetrimaaran’s
“Visaaranai” won the Best
Tamil Film, Best Supporting
Actor and Best Editing
awards.
The film, based on writer
M. Chandrakumar’s novel
“Lock Up”, had already
received international recog-
nition when it had its world
premiere at Venice
International Film Festival.
The film is about the story
of four migrant workers who
get wrongly blamed for a
crime they never committed.
This is the third time
Dhanush’s collaboration with
Vetrimaaran has resulted in
National Award wins.
Their earlier collaborations
include “Aadukalam”, which
bagged six National Awards
and “Kaaka Muttai”, which
bagged three.
