O
ne afternoon, Poonam
received a call from her
married son, “Mom, we
are going to buy a bigger house so
you can live with us and spend
more time with your
granddaughters. What do you
think?” Ever since her husband
died, Poonam had been alone. She
could not wait to call her friends
and tell them that her eldest son,
the doctor, is buying a bigger house
so she can live with him. She was
so proud to have such a good son.
Weeks later, her son called
again, “Mom, we want to renovate
the house your room too, can you
help us pay?” Poonam asked
questions, but her son snapped,
“Don’t you want to live with us
anymore?” Reluctantly, Poonam
went along with his demands; after
all, he was doing this all for her.
One by one, his demands escalated,
but Poonam remained hopeful that
he will take care of her and moved
into the new house.
Over time, Poonam stopped
going to social gatherings or calling
friends. Aconcerned friend visited
her and could not believe what she
saw. Poonam looked gaunt. Her
clothes were tattered. She was
sleeping on an air mattress in the
basement. She spent her days
cooking, cleaning, and babysitting
and was seldom allowed to leave
the house. Poonam insisted
everything was great. She declined
her friends offer for help she did
not want to get her son into trouble
or embarrass her family.
Eventually, Poonam did call for
help. Help did not mean she had
to report her son to the police. A
counselor visits Poonam at home
when she is alone so she does not
have to travel or ask for her son’s
permission to leave the house and
create more conflict. She signed up
for ESL classes so she does not have
to rely on her son as an interpreter.
With the counselor, Poonam is
finding her own path to healing
and overcoming elder abuse.
Poonam’s story is not
uncommon. NYAWC empowers
victims of elder abuse to regain
strength and independence. Help is
available. Please call our 24/7 toll
free, multilingual hotline 1888888
7702 for help, information, or to
refer an elder who needs help.
The New York Asian Women’s
Center (NYAWC) is one of only two
Asian agencies in America serving
elderly victims (aged 60+) of abuse.
NYAWC has staff and volunteers who
offer help in South Asian languages
including Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi,
Punjabi, and Urdu. All services are
free and confidential.
